On stage, he first actor to portray Hercule Poirot was Charles Laughton. He appeared on the West End in 1928 in the play Alibi which had been adapted from the novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
Albert Finney played Poirot in 1974 in the cinematic version of Murder on the Orient Express. It was a very faithful adaptation of the novel. Finney is, so far, the only actor to receive an Academy Award nomination for playing Poirot, though he did not win.
David Suchet has starred as the eponymous detective in Agatha Christie's Poirot in the series since 1989 and has stated that he plans to have filmed all of the Poirot stories by 2011 ...
To prepare himself for the role, he actually read every Poirot novel and short story by Agatha Christie. To further prepare for this role of a lifetime, David Suchet perfected his accent. He didn't want an accent that was Belgian because people mistook Poirot for being French, but it couldn't just simply be French, either. Especially that from Paris.
He said his accent was a "mix and match really, a mixture of French-speaking Belgian and country French." Suchet honed in on the specific accent by listening to Belgian and French radio stations, and perfecting it. Suchet adds that it was very specific and perfect, but it needed to be easily understood at the same time.
The serie is well known but received only 3 prizes from BAFTA, still most people do recognize the high quality of the whole production. Art Deco or old manors, you can't pin point a single chronological mistake. Nor can you ignore the obvious fact that Poirot is aging and getting more fat as time goes by ... details, details are always so important ;)
Nothing is left behind : David Suchet worked his character, and was recently ( 2011 ) honored by the Order of the British Empire for his contribution on the drama scene, neither is Captain Hastings' love for beautiful ladies or methodic Miss Lemon. Hercule Poirot might be self sufficient but the whole serie would not have been such a success without the details.
The English actor David Suchet has portrayed the detective Hercule Poirot on television since 1989. Many hail his portrayal as the most accurate and precise ever seen ...
